Steven Chen
Queen Elizabeth Scholars in Strengthening Health Systems (2018)At the time of the QE Scholarship, Steven was an undergraduate student in the Bachelor of Health Sciences program. Through his experiences in population health research and with student organizations, Steven developed a personal interest in exploring the influence of the social and political landscape on health system decisions.
As part of his Queen Elizabeth Scholarship, Steven travelled to South Africa to work with the African Centre for Evidence (ACE) on a project titled “Co-producing responsive evidence syntheses on environmental management to the South African national government: An exploration of model and mechanisms.” This project involved coordination with the South African national Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) and entailed producing products such as inventories of research evidence, evidence summaries, searchable evidence maps and rapid systematic reviews on environmental topics decided with various DEA units. Steven hoped that this experience would mature his perspective on the intersection between environmental factors and health outcomes.
