Peter Youssef

Queen Elizabeth Scholars in Strengthening Health Systems (2018)

At the time of the QE Scholarship, Peter was an undergraduate student in the Bachelor of Health Sciences program. He has a strong interest in the macro level aspects of health care and healthy systems and was looking forward to the potential of engaging in real-world change. Peter hoped to improve and add upon his research skills, especially in regards to using, generating, and communicating evidence-based medicine.

As part of his Queen Elizabeth Scholarship, Peter travelled to Johannesburg, South Africa to work with the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (DMPE) and the Africa Centre for Evidence (ACE). Peter worked on three projects while he was there. First, he worked on a data map of the National Spatial Planning Framework. He also reviewed and consolidated the evidence mapping work of the DPME, especially focusing on how evidence mapping works together with rapid response services. Finally, Peter worked on a landscape map of the different mechanisms that evidence is used in Africa. Peter hoped that this internship would continue to develop his skills in critical appraisal, while at the same time providing a real-world context for the importance of evidence syntheses.
