Miray Maher
GSO awardee in Developing Skilled Future Leaders in Strengthening Health and Social SystemsAt the time of the GSO award, Miray was an undergraduate student in the Bachelor of Health Sciences program at Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University. Miray’s main scholarly interests include migrant health equity and accessibility in Canada, especially for Arabic-speaking immigrants. She worked as a research assistant for Inclusive Communities for Older Immigrants (ICOI) study in the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Aging, Community and Health Research Unit, where she is used her fluency in the Arabic language to learn about Arabic immigrants’ perspectives on social isolation, social connectivity, and quality of life. Furthermore, as one of the Office Leads for Health Systems Evidence (HSE) at the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ ForumLab, she worked with a team of research assistants to maintain the HSE database. She was also excited to be the co-president of the Worldwide Orphans chapter at Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, where she hoped to continue fundraising for children in need all over the world.
As a Global Skills Opportunity (GSO) awardee, Miray travelled to the Caribbean Centre for Health Systems Research and Development (CCHSRD) in Trinidad and Tobago. Her aim was to nurture her cultural competency, develop a global skillset, and learn about the healthcare systems within the Caribbean by working with policymakers and through community engagement efforts. She hoped to apply this unique international perspective in her future work in the Canadian healthcare system.
